These are fairly janky, but unless you want to deal with an external battery, these haptics are about the best you can get on the Vive trackers.
A few things to note:
The pogo pads for the voltage and ground are very close to each other on the pancakes to match the voltage and ground pins that are very close to each other on the Vive tracker. If you’re not careful, they can short, which will make your Vive tracker very unhappy. Usually it’ll just shut off, but I’ve had this cause the tracker to not pair correctly for the next day. Not entirely sure why, but as long as you follow these guidelines, you shouldn’t have to worry about it:
-
Only attach the pancakes while the tracker is turned off and unplugged (you should ideally follow this for removing them as well)
-
Don’t overtighten the Vive tracker while it’s attached to the pancakes, this can cause the pads to twist and touch each other (and short)
-
Avoid letting the haptics run at full intensity for long periods of time (multiple seconds). They should pulse on and off when they’re activated rather than stay on
I’ve added a resistor to the circuit to reduce the amount of current the vibrators can pull. This means they’re a little weaker than they could be, but it does a lot to protect the GPIO pin that is powering them. The Tundra Tappers don’t have any of these issues because the Tundra Trackers themselves are better designed, allowing you to pull power directly from the battery.
